Allergies May not be cause of 'Asthma in kids'

Melbourne: A new research in Western Australia has questioned the long-held belief that allergies cause asthma in children. The study, conducted at Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital, suggests that cell abnormalities in the airways may be the cause of asthma.

Research program head Stephen Stick and colleagues are studying epithelial cells, which line the airways in the lung, and comparing them in children with and without asthma and allergy. Stick said the epithelial cells in kids with asthma behaved differently, especially in the way they responded to injury.

“All the surfaces of the body are subject to wear and tear and the lining of the airways is no exception. It appears however, that the lining of the airways in asthma are defective in the way they repair,” News.com.au quoted him as saying. Stick said the research aimed to uncover the mechanism of that defect.

He said that in the past, there had been a focus on the strong relationship between allergy and asthma. But only a minority of people with allergies ever got asthma, he said.

“This suggests that some other factor, specific to the asthmatic, must be at work,” he said. Stick said he hoped to identify the problem associated with epithelial repair, which could not only help the study of asthma, but also the medical approach to inflammatory diseases.Source

Aliens Is Exist But Are Yet to Visit Earth

Beijing: Extra-terrestrial beings do exist but they have not yet come to visit our planet, and the best way to communicate with aliens is to send radio signals, a top Chinese official said Tuesday. Zhu Jin, curator of the Beijing Planetarium, said aliens are likely to be present on some planets. Since there are about one trillion planets going around fixed stars, the possibility of the earth being the only planet with living creatures was “too slim to be true”, China Daily reported. But as to reports of sighting of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), Zhu said they cannot be true.

Some UFOs were proved to be planes, kites or other normal objects, and many weird situations can be re-demonstrated and re-created, he said. Zhu said the distance the Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled in the past 33 years only accounts for one-thousandth of the solar system’s reach. It will take 10,000 years for human beings to visit planets outside the solar system. So, if aliens living in a faraway planet have a similar level of intelligence as human beings, it was impossible for them to travel to earth, he said.Source

Why Mothers Bond so Well With Their Kids

Washington: Children share a special lifelong bond with their mothers which may be rooted in how the brain reacts when we see our mothers’ face. When adults look upon their mothers’ face, it triggers a stronger response in the brain than when they look at pictures of strangers and that of their father, according to scientists.

Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, researchers measured the brain activity of volunteers, with an average age of 35 years, as they were shown pictures of their parents, strangers and celebrities, reports the Telegraph. When they viewed images of their mother, the scientists found that it “lit up” key areas, associated with recognition and emotion, according to the journal Brain and Cognition.

The findings suggest that mothers produce a complex and lasting emotional and cognitive response in their children’s brain, as a result of the bonding experience that takes place between them and their children, as babies. Marie Arsalidou from the University of Toronto in Canada, who led the study with academics from the University of Winchester, Britain, said: “Differential activity to mothers’ faces may be attributable to greater exposure to one’s mother’s face during critical childhood years.” Source

Dinosaurs' Wiped out by Meteor shower lasting Ages

London: Dinosaurs may have been wiped out from the earth 65 million years ago by a meteor shower which lasted thousands of years, according to new evidences. Scientists had identified a giant Chicxulub crater in the Gulf of Mexico as the site of a single meteor strike thought to have obliterated prehistoric life on earth.

But evidence for a second impact in Ukraine, dating back thousands of years before the Chicxulub impact, has raised the possibility that the dinosaurs may have been blitzed with a shower of meteorites, The Telegraph reported. The Boltysh Crater in Ukraine was first discovered in 2002. But experts have unearthed a second cavity within the crater which they believe was caused by the aftermath of the Chicxulub impact - suggesting that the two meteor strikes occurred years apart as part of a wider “shower”.

Scientists dated the two Boltysh impact zones by examining the pollen and spores of fossil plants in the layers of mud within. Ferns are among the first plants to colonise a devastated landscape after a catastrophe, leaving layers of spores - dubbed “fern spikes” - which are considered good markers of past impact events.

The researchers found a second “fern spike” one meter above the first in the Boltysh crater - suggesting that two separate strikes occurred thousands of years apart. “We interpret this second layer as the aftermath of the Chicxulub impact. It is quite possible that in the future we will find evidence for more impact events,” said Simon Kelley of the Open University, who co-authored the study.

Monica Grady, a meteorite expert at the Open University, said the shower could have been caused by “the collision of Near Earth Objects”. The US space agency NASA has recently launched a programme “Spaceguard” which aims to monitor such Near Earth Objects as an early warning system of possible future collisions. The new findings are published in the journal Geology by a team lead by Professor David Jolley of Aberdeen University.Read More

New predator dinosaur found in Romania' With 2 deadly ripping claws on each foot

" Remains of deadly European dinosaur discovered "

Washington: Around 70 million years ago a stocky dragon stalked what is now Romania. A new type of dinosaur similar to the frightening Velociraptor — but with two sharp claws on each foot instead of just one — has been discovered by Romanian and American researchers.

“Balaur bondoc,” which means “stocky dragon,” was discovered in Romania by geologist Matyas Vremir of the Transylvanian Museum Society. The find is reported in Tuesday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. “Balaur might be one of the largest predators in this ecosystem,” explained co-author Zoltan Csiki of the University of Bucharest, who noted that higher sea level at the time made the region an island archipelago.

Csiki said that while Balaur is extremely unusual, it is closely related to animals like Velociraptor and the feathered dinosaurs in China. The researchers said the fossils show an animal 6 to 7 feet long with a stockier build than similarly sized Velociraptors that lived elsewhere on the globe. There are numerous similarities between the two predators, though.

“While we would expect that there were carnivorous animals in these faunas, finding one as unusual as Balaur is thrilling,” said co-author Mark Norell of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Matthew T. Carrano, curator of dinosauria at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, said the discovery is “one of those bizarre things that keeps reminding us not to expect that we’ve found everything there is to find.” Carrano was not part of the research team.

In the same region researchers have also uncovered fossils of tiny duckbilled dinosaurs and dwarf plant-eating dinosaurs that were the size of cows. The new Balaur fossil is a partial skeleton that includes leg, hip, backbone, arms, hand, rib, and tail bones.

It had a big toe with a large claw that can be hyperextended, presumably used to slash prey, as well as a large claw on the second toe. It had short and stocky feet and legs, with bones fused together, and the pelvis has enormous muscle attachment areas, indicating that it was adapted for strength rather than speed.

In addition, the hand is atrophied and some of the bones are fused, features that would have made grasping difficult. Stephen Brusatte, a graduate student at Columbia University who is affiliated with the American Museum of Natural History, said: “Compared to Velociraptor, Balaur was probably more of a kickboxer than a sprinter, and it might have been able to take down larger animals than itself, as many carnivores do today.”

Norell said it is hard to tell how it hunted or what it ate. But he noted that Balaur had very strong pelvic muscles could have helped it use a great deal of force. It was a small, stocky, very strong animal. The research was funded by the Romanian National University Research Council, American Museum of Natural History and the U.S. National Science Foundation.Read More

"La Tomatina" Tomato Festival Photos - Spain, 2010...

La Tomatina festival in Spain gives new meaning to the expression ‘playing with your food’. For most of the year Bunol is a ho-hum industrial town, 40km (25mi) from Valencia, quietly going about its own business. But come the last Wednesday of August, the town’s streets turns into a salsa riot, with over 20,000 revellers pelting each other with large, red, squishy tomatoes.

There are lots of theories on how the festival started; one is that it began in 1945 with anti-Franco protests, although any link between Franco and tomatoes remains ambigous. Another theory is that it started when two friends had a stand-up knock-down argument while sharing a meal.

The argument quickly reached food-throwing proportions, infected acquaintances and nearby diners, moved out into the street, spread through the suburbs, progressed to neighbouring towns and eventually wound up as an annual event that attracted ‘mata throwers from all corners of the the world.

At around 10 a.m., the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize.

The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle.

Although it is forbidden to tear someone else’s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and invariably will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal the end. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct.

The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Buñol River to wash themselves, although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.
